Late varieties certainly get short shift, particullarly at conferences/shows.
For our own show, when the season is early (as has happened several times and
may be the situation this year) the show gets cancelled while I still have
many late varieties still in bloom as well a numerous seedlings. At the end of
the season I suddenly realize that bloom will soon be almost over (we're not
considering rebloom at this time) and there as a rush of crosses made. This
has resulted in a bunch of later and later seedlings, some of which are in
bloom when the spuria start blooming.
The other factor are those varieties which start early and have succesive
flower stalks or bloom. A good example of this is my own Canadian Boarder
(white with red beard). It starts early in the season and appears to have a
low bud count yet was still in bloom at the end of the season. It took awhile
before I realized what was happening. It has lots of buds but they develop
slowly. Ones that you can't see or feel at the start of the season develop
slowly and are there and blooming at the end of the season. Two other examples
of this are Darkside and Sheba's Queen, both of which are in bloom for me for
close to four weeks. This is a characteristic which often gets missed and not
properly respected or appreciated.
