What grows well were is always an interesting topic. I list tender varieties
for me in my catalog. Hopefully this helps people in similar climates in
selecting their plants. There are a number of companies that offer iris that
are grown elsewhere and have pictures in their catalog. Unfortunatly, some of
the nicest photos go with plants that sulk here. My listing these tender ones
hopefully help people choose and be forwarned. At the same time other people
can have good success with the same plants even in colder climates,
particularly were there is good snow cover. Here (Southern Ontario, Canada) we
have delayed springs that encourage rot and the alternate hot/cold days lead
to frost heave and damage to plants that start to grow too early. Oranges
generally do poorly here with the exception of Good Looking and Firebreather
which increase well and performs well year after year. Before The Storm does
very well here. A number of pinks are tender growers with Vanity still being
the best for colour and vigour.Beverly Sills will grow but is a weaker plant
for me allthough other people find that it does well. Eramosa Miss, a BB, is a
nice ruffled pink/peach that handles our climate well. There are also a number
of fancy plicatas that are weak and a number of whites (particularly laced)
that are weak. Queen Of Angels is a laced white that does well here.
Broken colour and varigated foliage plants generally are iffy growers and
inconsistent performers. Canadian Streaker is my own varigated foliage TB that
is proving to be a strong grower everywhere and I'm currently working on my
own line of broken colour.
