Re: CULT: Blooming White

I've watched a bed of irises turned white over the last 19 years
prox. The irises in questions are about 3 blocks from our work
and when I moved back to this area 19 years ago the yard had
about a four foot planting filled with many varied iris colors and
heights (all beardeds). This went across the front (about 50')
and down both sides (about 75'). After the first several years, I
noticed more and more white irises blooming amongst the others.
I've never seen any further work on the planting. No division, no
digging and often, sadly, a lack of weeding. Nonetheless, the
irises have never seemed to diminish in numbers, but each year
there have been more white irises. I started to post about this
planting last year. This year, which is admittedly not the best
year for irises here, there were only white irises blooming. Next
year I would expect to see a few different colors if the season is
more hospitable. But ultimately I suspect the white irises are going
to take over if the planting is left to fend for itself. At least that is
how it currently appears. Too bad, because there were some
interesting irises not commonly seen growing in this area. One
golden mustard which might have been a BB really caught my
eye in the early years, but it's been some time since I've seen it
bloom.

this week and realized not quite all of them are going to fit in the bed
prepared. Ouch! And killed two copperheads in the yard this week.
Every twig makes me jump at the moment. Past experience tells me
time will dull the overreaction.
