Hi Gloria:
I have two wooden Whiskey half-barrels that I use for just that purpose. I
also plant iris in plastic "everything" (long planters, pots, etc.). Just
make sure not to plant them to deeply and place the containers where they
will get lots of sun. I've found that they can usually be treated just like
the ones in the ground. I leave the ones that are planted in containers as
they are during winter, but I live in eastern North Carolina, zone 8, where
we don't generally have very severe winters. Someone up in your area from
the list could probably answer this better than I for your zone.
