Sounds fine for the planting.  Don't know why you'd want to move them in. 
 Dirt is heavy!  I don't live in a cold climate, but I don't think it's 
supposed to be a problem.  If you're worried, you could always mulch them 
or cover them (not airtight!)

I have a large wooden Whiskey barrel and some very large plastic tubs.  The 
tubs are over 2 ft tall.  Being new to growing Iris, could I plant in these 
and would you just leave them in for the winter etc.  I am in Rhode Island
zone 6
