Re: HIST: Delayed Registration

I was hoping that someone who had sat through our 'Development of
Form and Color In Bearded Iris' would chime in and say: "No, there is
at least one older broken color cultivar" but it looks as if we were
not as successful teachers as we had hoped.

It IS an esoteric and little known point -- but the oldest known
broken color variety is: Antarès (Vilmorin 1927). From a comparison
of Antarès and 'Minnesota Mixed-up Kid' I would very much expect that
'Minnesota Mixed-up Kid' is an F1 of Antarès. The overall coloring,
the yellow extending down the haft edges, the similarity of style
arms and beard and the general 'familial look' argue strongly in
support of this speculation.

Antarès can be seen on the HIPS website in 'Quick Fixes' and
'Minnesota Mixed-up Kid' is toward the bottom of the 'unknowns' index.
