For true 'sticker shock', pick up a few daylily catalogs. Keep in mind that
daylilies are virtually trouble-free and increase like crazy. Most
introductions hover at the $100 range - and some even come in at $200 and
more!
I was at a daylily auction not long ago where a daylily went for $560!
And hostas are another alien world.... there are stories about one
particularly desirous plant that was auctioned (with naming rights) for
$3,300!
Again, far easier to grow than many irises.
I think irises are a bargain - even for introductions. And I do like to add
a few new things to the Guest Estates each year. Fortunately, I have a job
and a very capable 'rationalization gene' that allows me to justify spending
far too much on plants (don't tell sweet Lenny).
1. I did not attend the Oscars - saved $2,000 for plants and such
2. I did not order a Ferrari - Savings $$$$$
You get the picture.
Anyway, my advice on the prices of irises and others is to never look back,
never add up the checkbook and hide the packing list from the spouse.

craftily removed when aforementioned Lenny is golfing upside down in the
compost heap. Nothing but smoke and mirrors at Stately Guest Manor
