In addition to excellent bloom on the named IB varieties, I am getting good
bloom on the seedlings from some IB crosses I made a few years back.
The cross of HAVANA REVELS (Pinegar, 1991), a shorter TB variegata, X PIPPI
LONGSTOCKING (Innerst, 1985), a lemon yellow SDB with a red fall spot that
usually outgrows its class here, has produced seedlings that are uniformly
IBs, most of them being some shade of yellow with a red-brown spot on the
upper half of the falls. A couple of the seedlings apparently inherited a
recessive factor that suppresses carotenoid expression, as they are white
with blue-violet fall spots. The most surprising pup in the litter,
however, can best be described as an IB version of the well known SDB,
Raspberry Jam, as it is a slightly bitoned red-violet with a deeper and
redder spot on the upper half of the falls.
From the cross of TOY CLOWN (J. Gatty, 1991), a dark brown and yellow
plicata, X JITTERBUG (Keppel, 1988) I have obtained a bright
variegata-plicata that is very similar in coloring to a freshly opened
flower of Rick Tasco's SONORAN SANDS, and yet quite distinct in appearance.
The standards are a bright golden tan, but do not lighten appreciably as
the flower matures as is the case with SS, while the red-brown peppering on
the lemon yellow falls is either deeper or appears so because it is denser.
The seedling also sports a narrow white center line below the beards, which
is absent on SS. This seedling has five buds on each of its three stalks,
but is blooming at a height of only 16".
I will have to move it out of the crowded seedling row and see what it can
do with more room to grow.
