Hello, Everyone!
I returned yesterday from a one week trip to California that included iris
viewing, general sight-seeing, and attendance at the AIS Region 14 Spring
Meeting/Tour in Ukiah (magnificently hosted by the Redwood Iris Society and
with Bill Shear making a special guest appearance as the featured speaker)
to find my IBs approaching peak bloom. Before I left here it was looking
like the bloom season was going to be much further along when I got home,
but the weather turned cooler and wetter a week ago Sunday and has stayed
that way since, so I hardly missed any bloom at all.
Two-year old clumps of IBs putting on their typical sterling performance
include:
LET'S ELOPE (18 stalks, 22") Rich coral-salmon flowers with red beards; the
somewhat open standards allow the purple midribs on their insides to give a
glow to the center of the bloom.
MORNING SHOW (9 stalks, 28") Intense red self.
FIREBUG (7 stalks, 27") Very bright, clean variegata. Both this one and
Morning Show tend to have fewer stalks and larger flowers than the typical
IB, but are outstanding in their respective color classes.
CEE JAY (13 stalks, 27") Purple and white plicata with ideal IB flowers
that are unmatched for form, substance, and proportion.
LEMON POP (23 stalks, 24") Bright, cheery lemon yellow with a white spot in
the center of the falls; form nearly as good as CeeJay.
BROADWAY BABY (13 stalks, 24") Colorful variegata-plicata; almost a perfect
scaled-down version of its namesake.
GNU RAYZ (16 stalks, 22") Plum purple standards; pale lemon falls veined
and edged the color of the standards. Not too striking in appearance from a
distance, but sports a very interesting pattern on closer inspection.
JOHN (19 stalks, 24") Unusual combination of purplish brown standards with
golden tan centers and golden tan falls with purplish brown wash on hafts;
always super vigor.
MAUI MOONLIGHT (27 stalks, 23") Pale yellow; excellent form and proportion
(this is a third year clump).
NEW KID (13 stalks, 25") Intense, deep golden yellow with bright tangerine
beards. Tremendous carrying power in the garden. Unfortunately, the
substance is a bit below par.
New this year and making a favorable impression:
SAILOR (M. Smith, 1996) Crisp, pert, ruffled neglecta-plicata with light
blue-gray standards and starchy white falls with a broad rim of spectrum
violet. Excellent substance and proportion.
TANTRUM (K. Keppel, 1997) Brightest variegata-plicata yet. Golden-tan
standards; lemon falls with a broad band of bright burgundy red on the rim.
