Re: SHOW: Tough judges

Walter,
I couldn't agree more. It is sooo frustrating to see
good iris knocked down for inflated faults. I am
really sorry for your club members and remember
hearing the same story elsewhere last year (wonder if
they were the same judges). One thing you can do is
keep a judges book, as we did when we were dog
showing. We entered the name of every judge that we
showed under and entered appropriate comments on each
of them. If we felt that they didn't do a good job
then we did not show under them again.
I don't know how to correct this because most of the
judges guilty of this consider themselves to be good,
conscientious, judges who never miss a trick. Yes,
they are strict but that is to encourage the entrants
to strive for the very best. Never realizing they are
killing the joy of showing.
When I judge with a panel and a decision is made that
I feel is too harsh (or too lenienent)I ask the other
judges to point score it for me so that I will
understand what they are seeing. Usually we discover
that you can't really knock off as many points as they
thought they could.
Although there is not time to point score every entry
in a show I think a judge should keep this in mind. 9
points off is still a blue, not a Queen of Show maybe
but still a blue ribbon. An iris does not have to be
"perfect" to be a blue ribbon.
