CULT: mulch or not ?

I mulch Siberian and Japanese irises but not any bearded classes. I
used to mulch the bearded but I found it difficult to remove the mulch in
April when it was covered in ice and try to expose the rhizome to the light
and air. Now I just keep the rhizome exposed and don't have
any more rot than before. We usually have plenty of snow cover.

This is my banner year for rot. Have lost more medians than TBs simply
because I grow many more medians. I thought I had lost more but they
recovered and have solid rhizomes after the rot was removed and had a
dusting of Comet cleanser. I noticed that PERFUME SHOP has a soft rhizome
yesterday but I will wait it out and see what happens. I will
'operate' in a day or two if it doesn't improve. The plant looks great and
has many increases but I am wary.

The rot we get here has no odor and the poor rhizomes have had to endure the
equivalent of being soaked in a barrel of water for two months (my whole
analogy). I am keeping note of those who bite the dust and especially those
who have no sign of any kind of softness in the rhizome. Walter Moores -
everyone of your irises is doing spectacular and VIOLET SHIMMER and ASCII
ART will have to be divided this year after only one year. That is a first
for me re TBs who increase slowly here.

Cheers,

Ellen (from the temperate rain forest climate where the MDBs are blooming
and some SDBs are in green bud - SIBEs are growing fast)
