I don't think I'll get into this discussion except to say that in the garden,
we evaluate the iris - on the show bench, we evaluate the grower. And this
is to say that we are evaluating the iris against a standard, yes... but
more importantly, we are evaluating how well the grower grew it given weather
conditions - and how well it was presented at the show. If there was not
enough decent weather for anyone to get the optimum buds on their iris... we
consider that. We also pay close attention to grooming, presentation and so
on.
And we ALWAYS keep in mind that the public is mystified by the process! How
many of us have heard "why did THAT one win?? THIS one is prettier!"
So we do two things: 1) We hold a mock show during the judging (keeps people
occupied and educates at the same time) where we judge a bunch of irises -
some perfect, some not, out loud and answer questions.
2) We offer ballots for the PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD - this is where people can
vote for their favorite..... and express themselves as to what's 'purty'.
The PEOPLE'S CHOICE also serves a less obvious purpose..... since folks are
obligated to offer their full address on the ballot, we use this to create a
mailing list which trumpets our SALE when we offer the results of the ballot!
