Dorothy,
As stated in my previous posts, there is a great deal of latitude given to
fish club show committees in setting the tome of the judging. I also stated
that I do not know if this applies to those in the iris community. As I
also stated, I do not belong to an iris club, nor do I show iris, I just
grow them. Even in the fish community, judges are not, and cannot, be told
to judge to something other than the ideal, however, even if the judge feels
there is no first place winner in a class, we are often told we must award
one.

Dear Steve:
I think you have gotten an erroneous perception that local show committees
set how a show is to be judged. The American Iris Society (AIS) sets the
standards that are to be followed in any show in which AIS awards are
presented to exhibitors. While it is permissible for a show chairman to
point out any calamities, they may not tell the judges how to judge the
entries. Iris show entries are supposed to be compared to the ideal for
that
particular variety. The original complaint was that some judges are
supercritical, taking off more points than deserved for minor flaws. On the
other hand, some judges may be too lenient. All judges are required to
attend periodic judges training which explains how the standards are to be
applied, however it doesn't always sink in. Actually, more important than
show judging is garden judging where the merits of iris plants, rather than
single stalks, are evaluated for awards.
