How do you get people to come to these? We gave them for years as a regular
program the week before the show, but the people that need them don't come.
In our region, we have different types of show exhibitors: Those that want to
learn all they can to seriously compete, those that always show something but
don't want to be bothered to read or attend grooming clinics, and those
outside the club that think their irises are the most beautiful in the world
and show on a sporadic or once only basis without knowledge of show
procedures or show standards.
As a judge, when you see bad entries, the last two categories are the ones
exhibiting these irises. Shows are open to all exhibitors without regard to
their knowledge.
We could not get everyone together before a show. Honest! Everyone shows up
at different times. There is little time before a show, and we often do not
know who is showing until they walk thru the door. Many stick their irises
in exhibition containers without saying a word, walk out the door, and send
someone else to collect their stalks and expected awards. These people get
upset when theirs is not selected as Best Specimen, and never (or seldom)
return. These same people will not/do not come to grooming and exhibition
clinics.
My first show? In 1985, I was solicited from the community because I had
named irises in bloom in a late season. When I protested that I knew nothing
about showing, I was told that someone at the show would help me. When I
arrived and asked for help, no one had the time! Luckily, I was already an
AIS member and had read some articles on grooming. Still, I was unsure and
VERY frustrated. With beginners luck and a lean show, I won several lesser
awards and somehow lived to show again.
