I too have been a fish judge as well as being an Iris judge. they are similar
in many ways as there are many different cultivars that you need experience
with and many different fish you need to know. Judging is judging. There is a
tendency to look for the faults as a means to discount an exibit. Sometimes
this means a very good entry gets eliminated for a small problem. Asking for
it to be pointed out is a good idea as this will often result in recognizing
that the fault doesn't cause it to loose as many points as it would at first
glance.
I would highly recomend that the judges walk through the show afterwards and
listen to the comments by the general public. This can be very informative.
The public sees the beauty whereas the judges may have only seen the faults.
This also can be a problem when evaluating seedlings. I have found myself
looking at the faults and ignoring the beauty. Often it is visitors that alert
me to beauty that I may have otherwise ignored because of the judges training.
There needs to be a balance. Too harsh judging can certainly be discouraging
but standards need to be met.
