Jim,
Most of my seed has come from the SPCNI seed exchange. Those come in late
December or January. I've tried a lot of things but the best seems to be to
start their stratification ASAP. The get 4-6 week in the refrigerator and
then are set out at room temp. (Controlled studies have shown the need 4-6
weeks below 70 deg. and germinate best at 50 deg.) As the seed germinate
they are put in small pots. In the fall then they are moved up to larger
pots or put in the ground. This is not to say this method has been
especially successful. I've gotten lots of seedlings but I've only bloomed
one batch. After their first year they declined and finally died. Most of
my seedlings haven't made it that far. I do have some that I hope will bloom
next year.
