SHOW

On the subject of Show Judging, I wanted to share a few thoughts and
an experience from our show this spring. I thought our judges did an
outstanding job. Most entries received ribbons - which I think is
very important to reward and encourage new exhibitors and all who
take the time and effort to contribute to the show. I can't imagine
why it would be so difficult to give at least an honorable mention
ribbon to most entries.
My favorite story from this show illustrates why we put on shows, and
involves a stalk that did NOT receive a ribbon. It was my stalk, and
it really didn't deserve one, nor did I expect that it would. Our
theme was space age iris, and at the last minute, I decided to take a
less than desirable stalk of SCENTED BUBBLES. It did have two
beautiful flounced blooms, however, and I thought it would add some
beauty and another example of space age iris to the exhibit. After
the judging, later in the day, a visitor came up to our sales and
information desk, and demanded a plant of SCENTED BUBBLES! She just
had to have one! It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen,
etc., and on and on. We unfortunately did not have one on hand, but
signed her up for our Fall Sale, and gave her information on joining
the club. That one poor stalk may have created another iris lover in
the world. Winning blue ribbons is great (I got my share & the
Silver Medal), but we put iris on exhibition to educate the public
and share their beauty. The perfect specimen is not always the one
that wins someone's heart and introduces them to the flower we all
love.
