Re: SHOW: Judging

What a great topic... And what great ideas have been shared.

I really liked Kathy Guest's sharing the mock show idea... Often in Judges
Training around here Trainers will suggest you make haste for a fast
get-a-way as soon as the show is judged, so you don't get pounced on my folks
upset with decisions or wanting you to defend why you judged Pretty Penny a
blue and Doggie Blue only an HM. I feel that people CAN be taught and the
mock show would be an excellent avenue to do this...

I have judged a couple of shows where the falls and standards were hanging by
threads (due to hail as large as the iris flowers) and where rain had pelted
not just watermarks into darker blossoms, but more like dents. Even though
we've all been taught in Oklahoma to always "walk the show" before judging
begins (a 3 minute cursory walk of the entire show bench to see the overall
quality/lack of quality we're up against) I have occasionally started out
some of these horrid shows judging too harshly. Once judging a show in SW
Oklahoma with Perry Dyer, we proceeded to disagree (in a lively manner) over
this dark old iris with 2 or 3 open that I wanted to only give a 3rd or HM.
He wanted a blue. We backed up and reviewed all the ones we'd already
judged. After a little more persuasion (and reminding me that when you deal
with the type club and exhibitors we had on hand, you be lenient and
sympathetic and you want to encourage them -- not infuriate them... Once he
advised I'd be run out of town without a second glance at as much as a
MacDonalds, reality set in and I finally saw Perry's blue... It still didn't
make the head table, but we did start giving a few more blues... Weather
conditions play paramount importance in bench as well as garden judging in
Oklahoma.

I have been to shows where you'd of thought they'd run out of blue ribbons
and I don't like them either... I can't think of a show in Oklahoma I've
ever been to where every exhibit (as long as it conformed to the rules) got
something even if it was only an HM unless it was grossly misnamed or didn't
have all it's parts to be judged, or wasn't opened yet... It's gotta be open
to see it.

I've been lucky never to have to exhibit in a two day show... What a mess
they can be. So many flowers close on the 2nd day. How do you explain the
Queen's table when half are closed by Sunday??? Tulsa has 2 two day shows
every year.

On point scoring. I've never seen paper pulled out in iris shows. It's a
mental (just quickly do it in your head) thing with irises. Moreso point
scoring (especially on paper) is done in daylily judging. For Iris Queen's
table, once we get down to the final 10 or so, we pull out the paper to pick
our top 3 favorites. Usually that will take care of the outcome... If not,
a tiebreaker will usually take care of it.

As for Betty in Bowling Green, how sad folks don't have time to help others
in your neck of the woods... I have never seen that happen around here....
We are fortunate (apparently) to usually have several extra people standing
around (that have either gotten their entries in early, or had nothing to
bring, or just wanted to hang out) that jump in and help all newcomers. I
don't mind teaching while I'm grooming mine and getting my entries in, but am
embarassed to say I've never dropped everything and gone over to help a new
person -- haven't had to -- there has always been someone else available...
I do always go help folks when i get done if time permits... Especially when
Perry Dyer or Rex Matthews brings 100 stalks and have 25 to go into bottles
with 10 minutes til the cutoff :-) We are occasionally exhibition crazed
here in Oklahoma, a trait that may have been lacking this year (probably due
to our year off of shows last year thanks to hosting both the Nationals for
iris and daylilies)...

I know nothing about arrangement judging and can empathize with Kathy Guest's
comment about people being "mystified".... I don't ever see how they choose
any of those arrangements over another.... They all always look spectacular
to me...

Kath (not an arranger) in OKC.... =^.^= AIS Region 22, USDA Zone 7 where
our iris season is all but completely over... Only the spurias remain
now.... But the daylilies are bursting into bloom!
