Afternoon...
Spent 3 of the last 4 days on a whirlwind trip to a big famous Daylily Farm
(3 of 42 acres planted in nothing but wall to wall daylilies at complete peak
bloom) down in SE Texas... When I left here, I still had spurias in bloom...
We only had a little under an inch of rain while I was gone, but temps
started rising up into the 90's. Yesterday it hit 97 and today I think it
made it closer to a hundred... Needless to say the Spurias are completely
cooked and iris bloom is completely and totally 100% over for the year...
The Japs never had a chance, missed their miracid dose. I don't ever
remember the irises being gone so early in May...
Never ever even heard how the last OKC show on May 14th fared. I missed it
as did all I talked to. Had so little to take anyway, it wasn't worth it.
Then the show closed so early neither I nor Rex Matthews (who was on the '99
National tour) even had a chance to make a quick zoom over to check out the
show. A show only opened to the public for 3 hours makes me question whether
or not all that time and effort is worth it (IMHO)...
Daylily bloom in Oklahoma was predicted to be early, but appears to be right
on it's normal time table, although the heat of the last few days really is
starting to bring the scapes up and the buds popping out with color
everywhere... The daylily bloom down in Texas was about as fabulous as I
have ever seen (even including the early Florida Mecca bloom last year, mind
you I had to come home May 3rd). The Texas trip was definitely fruitful as I
brought home a #2 tub full that I must go out and start getting into pots for
their move to the shade...
May have been a good iris season, but it was sure a quick one...
