OT: Showing irises

Well, it looks like the "tough judges" thread is finally spun out. Whew! After reading about the intricacies and challenges of fish shows, dog shows and what have you, I’m glad it’s irises that I raise and show.

Just think, all you have to do when you bring your iris to the show is give it a little modest grooming, set it on the bench, wish it well and go off and have coffee or hit the shopping mall. You don’t have to lead it around a ring, hold its tail up, make it jump through hoops or keep it from making mischief with the other entries. You don’t have to test the hardness or the temperature of its water – just whether there’s enough in the vase. If your iris has leaf spot, you just artfully trim off that portion of the leaf. Fish get "ick", which is spotty, filmy stuff on their fins. But if you trim off a portion of its fin, your fish looks odd and it swims funny. And if your iris gives off a fragrance like cat urine, no need to panic. You’re not going to have to clean up after it. Which reminds me of another good thing about the iris. You can feed it right up to the time of the show and it won’t do anything nasty on the bench. But best of all, I think, is that no matter how gros!
sly you may mishandle it, your iris won’t bite you – which is more than you can say for a poodle or a piranha.
