Griff, your brief discussion of dog shows and the like led me to think
about karate tournaments, a subject in which I've become fairly expert over
the past eight years that my son has been competing (and to be permitted a
bit of a crow, he's a national champion at age 13). Judging is far from
objective in any of these things and to pretend that it is is fooling
yourself! Judging martial arts competitor, dogs, fish or irises is
idiosyncratic and always to some extent arbitrary and political. In
karate, even the enforcement of tournament rules can vary from ring to ring.
But when you walk on to the floor (or bring in your flowers), you are
agreeing to submit to the judgement of whoever happens to be judging that
day. Just the nature of the game!
I often disagree with kata and kobudo judges and iris judges, too. But
they are doing the judging, not me. My philosophy is "judge not, lest ye
be judged." So I stay out of the ring and out of iris shows!
