Mark, much of western Norway has a relatively mild climate. I now have
six different Louisianans growing in Zone 4B and they do not include
Black Gamecock, which I understand is one of the hardiest. All mine
have survived the last winter in my garden or in a garden in Quebec
which is probably colder. We had a relatively mild winter with only one
week of real cold [-40 to -50C windchill] but almost no snow cover. The
result was considerable loss of plants in most gardens but the irises
seem to have been unaffected - including I. decora seedlings which I
consider a a semi-tropical species. We lost quite a few other things
which were hardly, such as every chrysanthemum in the garden. Some of
these latter plants have been around for 40-50 years in my daughter's
garden.
Ian, in Ottawa where we have a very wet spring but the irises are
flowering early - the first Siberican will flower this week.
