CAT: Chuck Chapman's Irises
Normally I just lurk here, but this is something that's just too good not to
share. It's Chuck Chapman's place a bit outside of Guelph, Ontario. He is
growing some of the most spectacular SDBs imaginable. From LIMESICLE, the
glowing pale green plicata ice he is introducing this year, to the stunning
not-yet-introduced seedling from RUBY ERUPTION, which boasts near-black
plicata markings, to last year's intro, FOREVER BLUE, a reblooming light
violet-blue accented by a dark beard - his fields are alive with color, some
bold, some subtle, all of them making us forget the somewhat gloomy weather
that day.
Alas, NEXT GENERATION, a smashing new broken color intro in glorious shades
of yellow and soft purples, shown on the cover of his catalog, wasn't in
bloom that day. But there were others I HAD to add to my list, including
ERAMOSA SNOWBALL, a beautiful pure white including the beard, and CANADIAN
BORDER, a white with a red beard.
Of course he also has many SDBs from other hybridizers. I was especially
wowed by LITTLE ANNIE, a red with an almost black spot - it's a niece's name
as well, so of course, I HAVE to have it. There are so many more; I
recommend you do yourself a favor and go see those cute little charmers!
I'm planning more trips to see the other types of irises Chuck grows; his
gardens will be open for view on June 7, June 10 & 11, and June 17. Can't
wait to see what else he has for those of us who like to choose reliably
cold-hardy varieties.
Thanks for a great visit, Chuck, and a wonderful treat for a relative
newcomer to the world of irises.
