CULT:pH-value, color?

Dear irisarians,
Last year I dug a deep hole in my garden for a pond and got a huge heap
of sand, stones and gravel, probably not moved since the iceage. Of
course I planted irises on it, i.e. my little Grandma Amanda, dark
blueviolet-purplecolor. To my surprise the flowers on that heap looked
slightly more red than those on the usual sites. The rest of my
gardensoil has got pulverised limestone regularly and compost with a lot
of eggshells in it. I imagine it has a higher pH-value than the clean
sand from the deep. My question : Is it possible to change the color of
a blue iris by changing the acidity of the soil?
