TBIS

Just arrived home from the TBIS tour and meeting in Salem, Oregon--now I
know why it is so green there--all that wet stuff coming down on the Iris
Fanatics who wander around in the rain, looking at wet blooms--
Friday night was great--lots of munchies and an informal get-together--then
Saturday morning getting on the buses by 7:30 and off to Cooley's--we and
the rain arrived about the same time--so you went and looked at blooms, ran
back under the covered area till you dried a bit--then out again--Cooley's
blooms were great--really nice and tall--talked with Rick about it and seems
that they did not fertilize very much last year so decided to make up for it
this year--and it really worked--
Rick has many great seedlings--and there was a display of all the different
types of equipment they use--Cooley's gave us lunch--prepared by Rick's wife
and friend, then off to Paul Black's--where I fell in love with about 25
Hosta plants--he has hundreds of varieties!!!
and does he ever have great Iris--and all the seedlings there--saw an Iris
with a new style of horn--at about my nose level--their soil is great!!!
Then to Schreiner's--where their display gardens were the best I have ever
seen--and I am usually there almost every year--
Companion plantings of Lupine, Icelandic poppies and Pansies were great--and
most of the Lupin was at least 4 feet tall--
The Thursday before the tour--we ran into Dave Schreiner--at Keith
Keppel's--doing photography there!!! He says that since Keith always grows
them so tall--that he goes there to shoot them and to decide which ones from
there he wants to grow!!! Keith has some wonderful seedlings--and his 2000
introductions are fantastic--
Also visited Roger Nelson's--where his yard is stuffed with Historics--and
he gave us a guided tour of his house--which is now for sale--and does he
ever have some fantastic Iris pictures--in black and white--really
interesting to see them with no color--
Sunday morning had planned to visit several other gardens--but the rain was
coming down so hard we gave it up and headed home--and Thursday I head out
to New York for HIPS Happening--hope the weather there will cooperate better
than in Oregon--Carryl zone 3/4 in western Montana--where my TB's are just
now starting to open--
