Re: cult 'Thornbird'

I just LUV it!

In a small clump I have three "best of show" stalks but the terminal on
only one is in bloom ... was in bloom yesterday and is barely weakening
this AM.

I was judging in Poughkeepsie so I couldn't have taken any to the WNYIS
median show last weekend.

When I first saw 'Thornbird' in a photo, it took my breath away and now
it's HERE! I still luv it! The color, the substance, the branching,
everything! The standards open a bit as the day wears on, but not
unattractively. I'd wish for a larger bloom, but that might be my doing.
It's all in good proportion.

In this bed, I've done everything wrong, and I have GORGEOUS results.
It's much too crowded with columbine, poppies, geranium, lilium and tall
and short irises. I even topdressed with manure last year! None of the
beds in which the iris are isolated have done NEARLY as well.

Lots of folks in Poughkeepsie had huge concerns about leaf spot. I seem
to have it only on those isolated beds! Caused, I think , by slugs
climbing around.

I had a GREAT time with the irisarians in Poughkeepsie, NY ... Sandy
Ives and Maureen Marks make really good judging teammates. We found
'Sultan's Ruby' from Bob Keup to be "Best of Show" and many many really
good entries and a whole lot of energy in a small, young club! Watch
these folks go to town ....
