Mark--could it be slugs?  I have been having the same problem with my irises; 
was amazed to see the culprits at work last night at dusk.  I have never had 
a slug problem with irises before, but I do now!  Off to make a cheap beer 
run!  Anyway, I know hostas are among slugs' very favorites.
