Black plastic pots are shocking for absorbing heat, which the iris roots 
don't need. If you are using black plastic pots long term, I would give them 
a coat of white paint, to reflect the heat, and group them close together.

I sort of get around this, by sitting them on my old vegetable garden, where 
they can gros their roots through the drainage holes, and down another 20" 
or so. When we shift, the roots will have to be cut, but they will hopefully 
soon after find themself in the ground.

I must remeber that John, as I am a keen fan of Kellogs breakfast cereals .. 
<LOL>

The person who has the problem soil might be best to just make raised beds, 
with imported soil. It will look neater, and the irises will be happier.
