The caught leaves are due to rapid growth following a period of slow
growth. I think it most often happens when there is a dry or cold
spell followed by wet or warmth. I've seen this only a few times
with bearded irises, but "accordion" foliage is fairly common in
Louisianas (even illustrated in Daryll Trott's famous painting of
'Clara Goula'). My own explanation is that it has to do with Cajun
music.....
