Dear Theo,
If you have rebloomers, they should be fertilized more often. Other
irises, such as TB's, SDB's, IB's, etc. can be given phosphorus, the middle
number in fertilizers, such as Tripple Super Phosphate or Bone Meal. Most of
us fertilize when we dig & replant our rhizomes for our rhizome sale. The
time for you to fertilize & get new plants depends on your zone. I live in
zone 5/6. We dig our rhizomes for our society's rhizome sale during the last
week in July; so we will have lot's of time for the roots to regrow before
the ground freezes, thaws & refreezes causing heaving of the rhizomes if
planted too late. I fertilize when I plant. I also use alfalfa pellets &
compost.
