Great post Linda and really appreciated Bill's response! On this list
people might want gorgeous and unique blooms first and the general plant
care is secondary. People who haven't decided whether they want to plant
an iris, daylilly, rose etc. are going to ask about vigor, reliability,
care required. I hadn't fully considered (appreciated?) too all of the
different factors and environments the hybridizers must be asked to
create new superstars to tolerate! But then, I'm not a hybridizer either.
It seems like heresy to say, but I carry a bucket and break off lots of
bee pods daily. Otherwise, how would I maintain the integrity of the
named varieties in the beds? Also need to research the family lines of
some I have and see if there are any common threads there.

Understand we had record breaking temps yesterday...I am too busy outside
to catch the weather. Terrible sustained winds on Sunday, 30 mpg and up
for gusts. Have had several visitors every day this past week just stop
to look at the iris beds. I am not selling iris, word has just spread
that I've let people walk around and look at my "pretty flowers". I think
they also like to see first hand what some of these varieties look like.
BTW, Mesmerizer and Clarence were both new last year, 3 Mesmerizers in 3
gal pots are all blooming and great, Clarence is hanging on barely but
only had that one of it......so could be Murphy's Law (Char's luck!).
