There was quite a bit of discussion about the possibilities and mostly
unknowns of maternal inheritance in iris crosses a few years ago on the
list.  For those interested, it might be worth going back to read over
some of the discussion in the archives (which are fixed now - the files
were corrupted when I was searching for <toothpicks> the other day).

In general, the guess was that if maternal inheritance has much
influence on the offspring, it would probably mostly affect vegetative
characteristics.  (is that wishy washy enough?)
