Hello listers,
I just returned from the trip to Ukraine where guided ukrainean botanist Oleg Amekhin observed a population of Iris aphylla at Lvov region. It is on of few existing area of natural steppe on the north-west, west and south slopes of hills undisturbed by agriculture.
This population show remarkable diversity of Iris aphylla plants. Colors change from medium violet trough "standard" until deep purple and black-violet, that recemble miniature Deep Black. Reddish flowers are very rare and there are no one that could be named "significant". There was no white or light violet ones too. Beards change from all white (white bearded aphylla someone names "polonica') and light yellow to bicolor: whitish or yellowish in center and more or less violet at the end. It was found a hornlike beard and a reduced beard. Some designs appear: dark veins, blue stripe under beard and PLIKATA! It was great surprise to find some plikata plants in the sided separate part of population. Flower forms are extremely variable: "standard", "compact", "rounded", "spuria-like" and many indefinite types. Stems varie between 3 and 12 inches, some was branched some not.
I think only 10% of plants was blooming. It take many year between germination of seed and first blooming: one plant was 10 years old and carry its first bloom.
I made many photos and will send some to iris-photo list.
