I use my cultivator in the same way as many people use a hoe. It has a long 
handle, and 3 curved tines which bite into the soil as i drag it, turning 
the soil over and aerating it.
A names variety of iris (or any other plant) is known as a 'cultivar'.
An easy mistake to make I guess.
