It's the middle of the median season. Stop trying to influence my
vote! ;-)
Just got back from the convention. It takes a while to review a
week's worth of digests.
Everyone should have the opportunity to experience Roy Epperson
speaking on ethics to be practised by AIS judges. Everyone should
have the opportunity to experience Roy Epperson, period.
Equally, Sterling Innerst spoke eloquently on the TBs. I have more
respect for TBs and much more respect for the hybridizing community.
He had an excellent display garden; I only wish I had more time to
spend there.
(Query to Vince: Are the tapes available?)
And garden training with George Sutton was a special treat, though
George may have been shaken by the experience. ;-)
Finally, Clarence Mahan is a wonderful grandfather.
---------------
With respect to the Dykes Medal: I prefer to grow what I vote for,
and that makes voting quite difficult.
I have grown the following Dykes candidates:
Clarence (it's not where I mapped it this year)
Celebration Song (needs staking here)
Pele (doesn't do well in my garden)
Dotted Line (which hasn't bloomed and hasn't increased very much),
Over In Gloryland (nice plant, finally bloomed in its fourth year),
Tooth Fairy (nice little thing, but it can get lost).
Honestly, I'm concentrating on the median AM candidates and on
finding potential HCs. I don't think I am comfortable with any of
the Dykes candidates I grow right now to vote for them, I don't keep
most cultivars in the garden long enough, I dig every other year, and,
more especially, I don't think I grow enough of the candidates that
are currently eligible.
-----------------
I complained last year about rot problems. I cleaned up my garden
practices, torched everything early in the spring, and reduced the
problem to two instances from forty. Personally, I now believe that
gardeners select for rot, not hybridizers (at least in Ottawa).
-----------------
This is by far the best season we have ever had for medians. Every
cultivar, 1st or 2nd year, is putting on an outstanding performance
in all aspects. Perry Dyer's SDBs are magnificent. More on this
later.
Regards,
Sandy Ives (very tired)
