I just saw my first large collection of spurias and there were some cetainly
qualified for consideration..I feel that the developement in JI's is the most
extensive and dynamic.Medians have as many or more possibilities thanTB's.
But I don't believe you can beat the ease with which you get a consistant
spectacular show from a " dump me in the dirt an I'll grow " TB. I am not a
judge nor even a show'er but I do love iris in a garden.
Commercial growers capitalize a lot on Dykes Medal winners. An iris that took
special growing conditions would probably fail amongst the general public who
kill 80% of the plants they buy. Give these growers an "A.I.S. All American
Selection" or similar award to market with and the Dykes could be given to
any of the deserving iris
I wish there was an award for those hybridizers who have done so much work in
Iris. It should be something that adds to the marketability of their
"product". No, It it is not all about money but as anyone who grows more than
a few iris knows it takes money as well as copius amounts of time to grow or
develop a good iris . Those that have and will create good iris should have
something that denotes value in all their introductions. Something simple
like Master Grower
For me before AIS or this list a catalog had iris by Schreiners or Cooleys
and a bunch of other people. It was always safer to go with roses or
vegetables that had been tested for growth habits and "certified" or
"selected". Dykes medal winner seemed to be only indicator with iris.
I should buy EDITH WOLFORD cause it's certified as a Dykes Medal winner <VBG>
