The reason I am tipping the pots on their sides, is so the pot doesn't 
retain the snow.  I am
trying to prevent having a bunch of frozen puddles collecting on top of 
the rhizomes in spring.

And no I don't intend on mulching them, I don't mulch them in the garden 
either.  I am not
entirely sure of the benefit of mulching.  The last two winters we have 
had lots of snow that
stayed the entire winter, but often it gets really cold out in the 
fall/early winter before we
have snow often in the minus 30's and the irises seem to do fine.

I have had TB's come through two winters in small pots with no special 
treatment (no mulch other
than the white stuff) and I would like to see if they can be grown 
permanently in large pots.

I can only give away so much Immortality and Clarence and after that 
what do you do with those
irises that keep on increasing.....I thought they would make good 
subjects for experiments.
