If I could be as sure of having that white mulch (the best there is!) I would
not mulch my iris,  both potted and directly planted in the garden, as I do.
However, too often the white stuff elther melts between storms or, as was the
case the past winter, hardly comes in sufficient amounts to do any good.
Either white or plant material mulch seems to be needed to prevent heaving or
freeze/thaw rotting of the new rhizomes.  After the clump is established the
need for mulch is greatly diminished if not outright unnecessary.
