What is your experience with July versus later planted irises ?
July planted irises 'are' established here by winter time. What I am aiming
at doing it to find a way of increasing my success rate with the irises I receive
later in the season without going to too much bother. I know my own rhizomes
will survive just fine bare rhizome in the house all winter (not even kept cool) and
actually that would be the easiest way to keep them, but I find it hard to
neglect newly purchased irises that way. Has anyone tried this on a large number of
rhizomes, if so, what did you experience and did you get any to bloom the following year.

If I could be as sure of having that white mulch (the best there is!) I would not mulch my iris, both potted and directly planted in the garden, as I do. However, too often the white stuff elther melts between storms or, as was the case the past winter, hardly comes in sufficient amounts to do any good. Either white or plant material mulch seems to be needed to prevent heaving or freeze/thaw rotting of the new rhizomes. After the clump is established the need for mulch is greatly diminished if not outright unnecessary.
