OT: Naming of irises

Hi folks,
I am an oldy but haven't been around for some time. Hi to all my friends out there in iris land!
I do read the list frequently, but just don't have as much time to spare these days.

I have been writing articles for our local Iris Society (Victoria, Australia) and recently wrote a bit about labelling, and mapping. I just go the idea in my head that I would like to write an article about the reasons behind naming and registering irises, and thought I would prompt some discussion here to help me expand my idea.
In my head so far, my article would be along the lines of - naming and registering irises sets them apart from other cultivars, and especially from the multitude of un-named plants. This in turn, encourages competition between hybridisers, to produce better quality named seedlings. Without this "stud book" type system would the iris have developed as it has?
I also want to deal with the importance of iris fanciers keeping good records of those they grow, so that when they share their irises, they can send them on their way with their correct names, thus setting an example to gardeners in general.
A bit waffly so far, but your ideas and input would be appreciated.

Cheers all, from almost wintery Creswick, where the irises are going to sleep, Australia
Jan Clark
