I just go the idea in my head that I would like to write an article about the reasons behind naming and registering irises, and thought I would prompt some discussion here to help me expand my idea.Hi Jan,
Nice to see you posting again!
When I consider the purpose of registering and naming irises, my mind goes to three primary points:
1) Registering irises provides a record of pedigree that is invaluable and probably essential to hybridizers for identifying cultivars to incorporate into their breeding programs toward the achievement of their hybridizing goals.
2) Identifying irises by registered name allows for a competitive market for iris sales. It also makes it possible for iris buyers to acquire the exact cultivar they desire.
3) Uniformity in identification (registered name allows for meaningful evaluation of a specific cultivar's performance, strengths, and weaknesses in various gardens, climates, and growing conditions around the globe.
My 2 cents worth ... or less.
Laurie
