Re: repeat bloom vs bloom on increase

The ones I posted were purchased and planted 2004, have more than one
bloomstalk now, only one terminal fan. They are doing what I think Gary
Sides and Neil Mogensen (and me for sure) really like to see on irises
in our late winter/early spring killing freeze prone area.

Seems like Phil has sometimes included this info in his Rockytop
catalog, but I'm not sure.

The bloom on increase stalks are form a bit later than the stalk from
the terminal and usually escape damage. That doesn't seem to be the
same as what the handbook describes as repeat bloom, but is a trait I am
a lot more interested in than repeat bloom that doesn't come until the
heat of summer.

So, speaking of ambiguities (!), is this bloom 'immediately' after
spring bloom, or is it just another part of spring bloom?

I'll post a photo of what I'm describing, you'll have to tell me if it
counts as repeat or not, Judge Betty <g>.

Seedlings that have produced bloom on increase (normal stalks on
increase immediately after/concurrent with stalks from the terminal fan)

(DUSKY CHALLENGER x GRAPE ICE) X RINGO (early stalks showing color & the
suspense is killing me!)
GOLDEN APPLE X CRYSTAL GLITTERS
BEHOLD A LADY X CELEBRATION SONG
PINK FORMAL X ?
PINK FORMAL X CELEBRATION SONG

Some occasional rebloom amongst the group. I'll have to check, but I
think all the cultivars that have had this trait here have been reported
to rebloom sporadically in iris heaven.

<Linda, are these irises that bloomed after you received them last
year?

According to the newest version of the judges
handbook: Repeaters produce
                   additional bloomstalks with unpredictable regularity
immediately following the
initial Spring bloom season. It is not uncommon for
these varieties to extend
the spring bloom season from four to eight weeks.
.....

The ambiguities come from the word immediately. Some
put up bloom stalks 4
weeks after initial bloom but do not bloom again in
the fall. Some of these
stalks bloom right at the end of the season, while
others can bloom as late
as July 1 in my climate.

Just as an example: Summer Radiance performs this way
for me. It has NEVER
bloomed later than early July (here). Seedling might
be of value if I have the parent list. ;-)>
