In order to put this all in perspective, I will answer this part first! ;-)
What I say is always just my opinion. We all have them! But, it's a more
educated opinion than it was 20 years ago! Even so, people often disagree
based on their own opinion!
In other words . . . it's worth what your paying for it!
<<So, speaking of ambiguities (!), is this bloom 'immediately' after
spring bloom, or is it just another part of spring bloom?>>
PEARL CHIFFON was distinct in my earlier garden because it produced a lot of
stalks in the clump. However, all stalks came up at the same time, were
exactly the same height and branching, and they all bloomed at the same time.
Then it was gone! Beautiful but maddening!
Most irises that I grow don't behave this way! Thank goodness! Two or
three stalks emerge, and then another stalk, and another, until the clump is
finished and it's season is over. In my opinion, these are sequential bloom
stalks, not repeat bloom. (This is why I think the word immediately clouds the
issue.)
I'm only trying to interpret what other's write. It is possible that the
official definition does include these stalks that bloom at the end of the
clump's regular season.
My personal definition of repeat bloom:
1) These irises do NOT give late summer or fall bloom.
2) The season is over and LAST HURRAH has given up it's last bloom!
3)Then you spot stalks emerging here and there on clumps that have already
bloomed. These are repeat bloom. (my opinion)
If REPEATERS are to extend the spring bloom season from 4 - 8 weeks as
stated in the current judges handbook, I think my definition makes sense!
To define by example: (In my garden)
Cyclic Rebloomer=Summer Olympics. It has a distinct and predictable fall
cycle of bloom.
Countinuous Rebloomers=Immortality and others that can bloom any time and in
most climates.
Repeater=Summer Radiance. May initiate new stalks anywhere from a week to 4
weeks after spring bloom, but NEVER blooms in the fall. (Has started repeat
bloom up to 6 weeks after regular bloom)
Sporadic=Victoria Falls, Beverly Sills etc.
