HYB: still a few

Well, whenever I find the gumption to do it I have two whole beds of seedlings
to dump; only one "save" in the lot (a SA variegata luminata with great
appendages). A lot of Double Dribble stuff did not turn out well, and the
Throb X Dream Lord cross was a lot of uglier versions of Bengal Tiger. That
was a what-the-heck cross anyway; I guess I got what I deserved. One of my
better crosses to bloom this year was a (low expectations) (Rock Star x Gnu) X
(Laugh Lines). Laugh Lines may be a good parent. Only about 4 - 6 seedlings
in heavy shade between a rock wall, 3 king palms, a variegated flax, and a
banana bush. The first to open was a nicely ruffled, heavily marked plum
thing; the second one opened today. It was a nicely ruffled and serrated,
heavily marked, veined and dotted violet-plum thing. A bit of white ground
shows in a small zonal area with about 50% dotting and no veining; the rest of
the falls are heavily veined in a hard-to-describe way that blurs the white
"ground" and reduces the contrast. I like the even veining; only the petal
edges are a solid color. The standards average out to about the same color,
with a less exotic almost-solid wash of stippling. The snails (bad this year)
got about half the flower.
