Hello Martin,
I agree with your assessment of strategies.
And would add:
1.) there are some other tetraploids I'd like to try
out too -- croatica and junonia for instance, and
although it has been used already, aphylla still has a
lot to offer.
2.) you've got me figured out here. For instance, I
just pollinated a bunch of flowers on 'Honorabile'
with tetraploid orange TB pollen. From what I've
gathered especially from Neil Mogensen's postings, the
founding irises for our modern TB, were not very
numerous. It seems that a small number of offspring
(of diploid European pod parent X Asiatic tetraploid)
were used to breed what we have today. I realize that
a few other diploids were pollinated by some of these
founders, and aphylla and balkana have contributed
genes also. But, overall there is a lot of room for
gene pool expansion.
3.)the pumila spot is being fairly successfully
intoduced into the 48 chromosome bunch, just as you
mentioned, by crossing IB with TB. I'm sure that aril
genes can be introgressed similarly (and probably
already have been to a degree).
