Linda Mann commented, regarding haft patterning genetics: "Maybe [they were]
part of the pollinator guidance system."
Linda, I suspect you have put your finger right on the reason for the
persistence of the patterns. They played a role in wild population survival
probability.
After the thread yesterday and this morning, I was going through the
remaining seedlings not yet discarded, and spotted two more very wide,
ruffled seedlings with elaborate and strong markings covering half of the
fall in each. I'm marking those as "keepers" for the nonce...maybe I will
try the sort of cross you mention, as I'm curious about these, and also
because after I looked at them more closely, I thought they were rather
attractive. Both are from Happenstance X Power Woman, or the reciprocal
cross. There are similar seedlings from Happenstance's sib, Vienna Waltz
crossed with Power Woman also, but the best have come from the Happenstance
offspring.
I had previously saved some beautiful self-colored seedlings from the
crosses, but these two add to a small collection of the strongly patterned
ones saved.
As if I needed another project to add to the three I have going.....or four,
depending on how counted.
