John, the possibility of really strong contrast keeps coming up in current
irises too. Here's a seedling that is woefully short on branching, but does
give some well-branched seedlings when bred to something else that has the
branching: P 2-4, which is from Great Gatsby X Romantic Evening.
Paul Black's HABIT is in a similar color range.
Some seedlings from Wild Wings X P 2-4 were along this line also.
Twenty to twenty-five years ago such black or blue-black falls were not
showing up. Farther back than that was Cook's own TOLL GATE. That isn't
the one of which you were thinking, is it? It has similar color value, but
I never cared much for the form. It never gained the prominance that both
Whole Cloth and Melodrama did, along with a somewhat less happily but widely
accepted Emma Cook.
