Re: SDB; mystery cultivars

Thanks Christy for taking the time to do some checking. Both 'Sapphire
Gem' and '[new] Bedford Lilac' sounded familiar to me, but I couldn't
place them. The 'Sapphire Gem' I should have found in my copy of the
'70's checklist, but I missed it somehow (haven't gone back to look again
yet). The 'Bedford Lilac' is newer than any of my listings. I'm
definitely biased toward old Iris; so, I haven't had much reason to buy,
downloaded, nor keep current access to any of the newer checklists. One
of these days I'll get them.

Yesterday I set out my Home Depot "New Bedford Lilac" plants and a small
white printed tag fell out of one of the pots (not the fancy photographic
commercial tag with the wrong photo that was in there too), and it said
"Bedford Lilac" with no "New". I don't know if that's what it really is,
but it looks reasonably similar to the few pictures I can find. So, that
may be two of the Home Depot blues that are registered, correct, and
legitimate

It would be interesting to learn more about the "Wood's" line of
cultivars. I wonder if they are just putting made up catalog names on
some NOIDS they grow, or if they actually bred or are distributing some
cultivars of their own. So far, I haven't contacted Northwest
Horticulture themselves.

I have certainly never seen anything that looks like their 'Wood's Light
Blue', and I can't imagine any breeder introducing one that looks like
that since perhaps about 1940. Even in 1900 it would have been
questionable. However, it does look a lot like a number of the really old
IB and I. x germanica cultivars in form and habit, and I suppose it could
be some old Sass thing or collected thing that I've never heard of. It
reminds me of I. albicans, but with less substance, and of course it is
pale blue. The other "Wood's" cultivars they list, I haven't seen, so I
don't have much to say about them - just curious.

Dave
