Pods! Who wants to see pods? Bah! Hum Bug! <vbg>
32 pods from the first 60 or so crosses. I thought I was running a higher
rate this year but that's about average or normal for me.
I think I'll quit now! Like the rain is giving me a choice! I've never
lost so many stalks to blowing over in the storms. The early heat cause a lot
of them to grow tall and small. Those with big strong stalks tend to have the
"quick growth" breaks in the stalks. Found one of my anticipated crosses
with stalk fallen over from a low break that I'd missed in the earlier
inspection.
This year is rivaling 1990 for rain during bloom season. (so far) In 1990
the rain continued in the month after bloom season. It was the year when I
learned so many lessons about rotting stalks and pods!
Remember to save your broken pod if it's been crossed even a month!
Last year, 2008 was crossed late on May 6th, and found on June 11 with the
stalk totally rotted. No telling how long the pod had been without nutrients.
The pod hung in a lace bag (deer bag) on my pegboard for weeks. Produced
64 seed and at least 35 plants. Can give an exact count of plants when I
plant next week.
Same thing happened with an Orange Empire cross back in 1990. Except it was
on my garden table with half the pod rotted off. Cleaned it with the garden
hose in an old sieve. Produced plants, 9/25.

If you don't cross them, you can't plant them! (who would say something
like this?? Must be a bit "off??")
