RE: Culture: Grass in the iris beds

Hi All: Very seldom does a thread appear where I feel I can chime in with

Shortly after we moved into the new property back in '94 we were plagued with
grasses in the iris beds. Our local gardening center told us about POAST
(fusilade). We tried it but had very limited results and found it was totally
ineffective against Poa annua (annual blue grass).

A few years ago another iris grower recommended that we try ENVOY. (Until
then it had been hands and knees control). We have had much better grass kill
rate with ENVOY than with any other grass killer we have tried ....with the
obvious exception of Roundup (glyphosate).

As with any herbicide timing is of the utmost importance and should be applied
(according to the label) when the grasses are from 2 - 6 inches tall and
actively growing. ENVOY would most likely be ineffective if the grasses are
stressed by drought or cold temperature.

ENVOY can be sprayed over the top of the iris with no damage at all and I have
reserved a separate backpack sprayer just for its use so as to not be
contaminated with other herbicides.

I don't know what the price is currently and it probably will not be available
at your local garden center. Most certainly should be available at most farm
stores.

Hope you may find this helpful.
